My watercolor of the lone cypress in Pebble Beach, California
This piece was my first large scale painting in this style. The masking fluid is particularly effective at capturing rock formations. Gray is one of my favorite colors and I use it as a base for this painting. Burnt sienna is used in the ocean to represent the seaweed floating and swirling in the waves.
This piece pairs well with Carmel-By-The-Sea and Cypress Grove.
My painting process involves using masking fluid to lay out the essential structure of the landscape. I then focus on adding color that brings feeling and sense of life and movement to the place. When the watercolor is dry I remove the masking fluid with a rubber eraser. I love this step and the brightness of the paper that re-emerges once the masking fluid is removed.
